Barcelona photographer’s notes

The Magic of Autumn Morning Light in Barcelona

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for photography in Barcelona. The sun sits lower, light comes in from the side rather than directly overhead, and long shadows make ordinary places look extraordinary. On a clear morning, I can follow that beautiful directional light for hours – without the summer heat or crowds.

This morning I went to Parc de les Aigües, near Alfons X, and found exactly the kind of light I love: warm, low and full of unexpected shadows.

A Different Kind of Golden Hour

As November approaches, the sun sits lower in Barcelona’s sky. The light arrives at a different angle, shadows stretch across walls and paths, and familiar places begin to look new.

After the clocks change in late October, I often head out around 7:30 AM. On the morning I photographed this walk, I enjoyed the light until roughly 10:30 AM. That is not three hours of astronomical golden hour – the first hour after sunrise is the classic golden hour, while the lower autumn sun can keep producing striking side light and shadows later in the morning. Sunrise times change by date, so always check the forecast and sunrise before planning your own walk.

Strictly speaking, golden hour is the period around sunrise and sunset. What I love about autumn and winter is that the sun stays lower during the day, making directional light and long shadows easier to find.

A Morning at Parc de les Aigües

Today I walked through Parc de les Aigües, near Alfons X metro station, with my camera. It’s the kind of place where you can stop every few steps because something catches your eye.

There’s a beautiful contrast between green foliage and warm yellow sandy paths. Some parts feel lush and overgrown, others are open and sandy, and the yucca plants add strong graphic shapes. Flowers bring little patches of color, and sunlight slips between the trees, drawing shapes on the ground and walls. On my morning visit it was quiet, with very few people around.

I photographed blue flowers against deep shade, small details of leaves, the palm trees in the morning sun, and my own shadow on a wall. Nothing was staged. I was just following the light.

Why I Love Barcelona in Autumn and Winter

Summer has its own energy, but autumn and winter are my favorite seasons for walking with a camera. The light feels more sculptural. Even an ordinary corner becomes a composition when the sun catches one surface and leaves another in shadow. The weather is also more comfortable: I can walk longer without worrying about the intense summer heat or sweat showing on clothing. There are generally fewer tourists than in peak summer, too. I prefer mornings because the paths are quieter, the air feels fresher, and the plants can still be damp from the night.

This is also the light I enjoy using for portraits: warm highlights, darker backgrounds and a sense of atmosphere without needing a famous landmark in every frame.

For me, photography is often less about finding a spectacular place and more about noticing what is happening right in front of us.

My Portrait Tip: Follow the Patches of Light

When I photograph people, I look for a small patch of sunlight on the ground or a wall. I might ask someone to step into it, or frame just their face, hands or silhouette in the light while the rest of the scene stays dark. It works almost like a natural spotlight. I love that contrast – it can make a simple portrait feel graphic, intimate or even a little mysterious.

What to Wear for an Autumn Photoshoot in Barcelona

I usually suggest comfortable, solid-colored clothing with some movement: a loose shirt, a flowing layer or a textured cotton piece. Natural fabrics and relaxed shapes often look beautiful in the side light, and you can still dress fairly lightly on many autumn days. I would avoid anything that feels restrictive or makes you uncomfortable while walking. Check the temperature for your particular morning and bring a layer if needed.

This kind of morning light can work for solo portraits, couples, family sessions and maternity portraits. The route and pace should suit the people being photographed – especially families with young children.

Come for a Morning Photo Walk

If you’re in Barcelona in the colder months, I really recommend an early walk. Look at the trees, the walls, the little flowers and the way shadows change as you move.

And if you’d like photographs of yourself or someone you love in this light, we can plan a relaxed morning together. Take a look at my solo photoshoots in Barcelona or couples photography for ideas. I’d love to show you a quieter side of the city.
