Planning a family photoshoot with children

With children, naps, snacks and energy matter more than perfect golden-hour light. I prefer a simple route with time for breaks and natural movement. A weekday can make a popular park less crowded. I photograph the small interactions as well as a few classic family portraits, so parents get to be in the pictures too.

A family photoshoot with children does not need to be perfectly organized to be beautiful. In fact, some of the best moments happen between the planned photographs: a small hand reaching for yours, a sudden laugh or a curious look at something new.

Choose a time that works for your child

Light matters, but so do naps, meals and energy levels. A tired child will not enjoy a photoshoot just because the sun is in the perfect position. Tell me about your routine and we can choose a sensible time.

Keep the route simple

With young children, one compact area is usually better than moving between several landmarks. We can create variety with nearby backgrounds and leave room for pauses.

Bring the essentials

Water, a snack, wipes and an extra layer can make a big difference. If your child has a small favorite toy, it can help them feel comfortable. You do not need a suitcase of props.

Do not expect everyone to look at the camera

We will try a few classic family portraits, but we do not need to spend the whole session asking children to smile on command. Walking together, holding hands and playing naturally can create photographs that feel more like your family.

Coordinate clothes loosely

Choose colors that work together without dressing everyone identically. Most importantly, children should be able to move comfortably. Avoid anything scratchy, tight or difficult to adjust.

Let the session follow your family

If someone needs a break, we take one. If a child is curious about a leaf or a bird, that can become part of the story. My job is to help you feel at ease and capture the moments along the way.

A family session is also a chance for parents to be in the photographs instead of always standing behind the camera.

MY APPROACH

I love showing people a side of themselves they didn't know was there. No complicated posing or pressure to perform. We walk, talk and explore the city, and I capture the little moments along the way.

We decide on the route and time after talking about your preferences, including direct sun versus shade. Weekdays are often less crowded. Essential: 1 hour, €150, 50+ edited photos. Experience: 2 hours, €300, 80+. Half-Day: up to 4 hours, €500, 150+. Extra locations and clothing changes depend on session length and travel time.

I'm Alex, a Barcelona-based photographer. I help people feel comfortable in front of the camera, even if they've never had a professional photoshoot.

Make the session comfortable for children

Choose a child-friendly route

Prioritize shade, toilets, stroller access and a place to pause. A location with several backgrounds within a short walk is often more useful than a famous landmark that requires long queues.

Make room for imperfect moments

A child may want to explore, sit down or be carried. Those interactions can become meaningful photographs. Build in time for water, snacks and reassurance rather than asking for continuous smiles.

Plan the group combinations

A short family session can include everyone together, each parent with the child, siblings together and a few candid frames. Tell the photographer if grandparents or additional relatives are joining so the timing is realistic.

Frequently asked questions

What age is best for a family photoshoot?

There is no single best age. Plan the pace and timing around your child’s routine and comfort.

Should we bring a stroller?

If your child uses one, it can be helpful for breaks and moving between nearby spots. Check route accessibility.

What if my child cries during the session?

Pause, comfort them and adapt. A relaxed session should not depend on a child performing on command.

Choose a route that works for your children

With babies and toddlers, comfort matters more than visiting the maximum number of landmarks. A short route with shade, space to move and somewhere to pause is usually easier than a steep itinerary with lots of stairs. Parts of Parc de la Ciutadella or pedestrian-friendly streets in Poblenou may work well, depending on your family and the time of day.

We can build in feeding, snack or stroller breaks and follow your child’s pace rather than expecting constant posing. Tell me in advance how many adults and children are joining, and whether you need step-free access, so we can choose a realistic meeting point and route.

Plan a relaxed family photoshoot

Tell me what you have in mind. We can choose a route and a time that suit the light, the places you love and the way you want to feel in the pictures. Private photoshoots start at €150.
